J. Scott Lasater

J. Scott Lasater is the founding member of Lasater & Martin, which was formally established in 1993, over thirty years ago. Over that time, Scott became one of the most experienced civil trial attorneys in Colorado, trying jury trials to verdict or directed verdict across the entire state.

On December 31, 2023, Scott transitioned from a full-time litigation practice to being “Of Counsel” with the law firm. In this role, Scott provides support for the successful operations of the law firm; he handles a handful of specialty cases; he acts as an expert in giving standard of care opinions in attorney malpractice and insurance bad faith matters (both for plaintiffs and defendants); and he acts as independent counsel, sometimes referred to as personal counsel, representing individuals and businesses being sued whose defense is being managed by an insurance company.

Scott and the law firm have saved hundreds of millions of dollars in client assets over the years. Scott’s career highlights include prevailing for a client in a 120 million dollar product liability suit involving an explosion and fire at a Wyoming oil refinery; winning a trademark infringement suit against the premier IP firm in the state in front of a federal jury; successfully representing numerous Colorado municipalities in federal and state jury trials, including the Town of Vail and Town of Parker; being brought into a civil jury trial during jury selection, in El Paso County, with no notice or preparation and winning the trial on directed verdict 4 days later; obtaining countless jury verdicts all across the state in favor of his clients, and obtaining millions of dollars in settlements and awards for Scott’s own clients who were either injured or otherwise hurt by the conduct of another.
