Lisa Hungerford has almost 30 years of litigation experience, primarily focused on insurance defense. She comes to Lasater & Martin after 23 years of practice in Colorado, most recently as in-house counsel for a large insurance company. Lisa has tried over 70 jury trials to verdict in addition to numerous bench trials and arbitrations, in both Texas and Colorado.

In June 2023, Lisa relocated her practice to Houston, Texas but continues to handle both Colorado and southern Texas cases on behalf of the firm. Lisa’s background includes litigating premises liability, personal injury, professional malpractice, general liability and property damage cases as well as homeowner’s association disputes. Her experience also includes defending catastrophic injury claims, including traumatic brain and spine injuries and wrongful death claims.

Work History

After law school, Lisa practiced in Texas defending medical malpractice and nursing home negligence cases. In 2000, she moved to Colorado where she focused her practice on trial work. In 2010, Lisa was hired by a large insurance company as a Trial Attorney. Lisa was promoted to Supervising Attorney in 2014 and promoted again to HEAT Attorney in 2021 (HEAT: High Exposure Attorney Team).

Lisa returned to her roots in Texas in 2023 accepting a position with Lasater & Martin as Special Counsel to the firm, handling its Houston and surrounding area cases. Lisa also continues to litigate Colorado cases for Lasater & Martin.

Representative Experience

  • Most recently, Lisa obtained a defense verdict in a two-week trial in Castle Rock, Colorado on a traumatic brain injury case where the Plaintiff was seeking over $4,000,000.00 in damages after a minor side-swipe collision with Lisa’s client.
  • Lisa secured a defense verdict on a slip-and-fall in Durango, Colorado where Plaintiff requested $3,500,000.00 in damages for loss of her business due to total wrist replacement.
  • Lisa has secured several summary judgments on premises liability claims under the Colorado Premises Liability Act, including one wrongful death claim.
  • In a low velocity impact case where Plaintiff incurred over $250,000.00 in medical expenses, far in excess of Lisa’s client’s auto liability policy limits ($100,000.00), Lisa was able to limit the jury’s award to $4,000.00. Plaintiff appealed. Lisa also handled the appeal whereupon the jury’s verdict was upheld by the Colorado Court of Appeals.
  • In a case of first impression, Lisa secured Summary Judgment in Colorado in 2023 on behalf of a homeowner’s association based upon the “Business Judgment Rule” where Plaintiff/Homeowner was seeking over $400,000.00 in damages for third-party trespass.
